At  M O Sullivan Garden and Tree Services, we believe that planning ahead is the key to good gardening. That is why even though we are in August  (the Summer???) we decided to write down a small plan for getting your Dublin garden ready for Winter

Getting Your Dublin Garden Ready for Winter

As the colder months approach in Dublin, it’s crucial to prepare your garden for the winter season. Here are some key tasks to tackle to ensure your plants, furniture, and accessories survive the wet and windy weather:

Protect Your Garden Furniture

  • If you have space, store garden tables and chairs in a shed or garage to protect them from the elements
  • If not, use waterproof covers and secure them down to prevent blowing away in the wind

Prepare the Soil

  • Rake up fallen leaves and store them in black sacks with holes. The following year, this will turn into a great mulch for your soil
  • Spread a generous layer of organic mulch like cardboard, straw, wood chip, or shredded bark on beds to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and add nutrients as it decomposes
  • Incorporate compost or well-rotted manure into the soil to improve fertility and structure for next year

Clean and Store Pots and Containers

  • Give pots and containers a good cleaning with warm soapy water before storing them somewhere safe and dry
  • Lift potted plants onto pot feet or bricks to improve drainage during the wetter months

Maintain Your Plants

  • Cut back perennials before the first frosts, leaving some for wildlife to enjoy the seeds and places to hide
  • Compost the cut stems and foliage, then mulch the plants
  • Harvest any remaining crops like tomatoes, courgettes, beans, and late-season fruits
  • Sow seeds or plant seedlings of cold-season crops like spinach and kale for an autumn/winter harvest

Secure Garden Accessories

  • Ensure any loose items that could blow away or get damaged are secured down or moved to a safe place
  • Take down fairy lights and store them until next year

These tasks will help in getting your Dublin Garden ready for Winter

for the cold and stormy winter months.
